


Salvador da Bahia is an intriguing city, full of history, religion, culture and sheer natural beauty. Heavily influenced by African traditions, the local cuisine, music and religions bear the hallmark of the descendents of the African Slaves. It is often dubbed the “City of Happiness” due to the enthusiastically friendly locals, who always seem to find a way to enjoy themselves through, music, dance and stories.
Salvador’s influence on popular Brazilian culture is vast with many of the alluring rhythms associated with Brazil originating in the city and its surrounds. The friendliness and warmth of the people sees the traveller feel a part of this magnificent city allowing a satisfying discovery of one of the most influential cities in Brazil.

Discovered in 1501 on All Saints Day, which incidentally is the name given to the bay that Salvador is built on, it was colonised in 1549. Salvador was recognised by the Portuguese as an important stop over point for its traders and was the capital of Brazil until 1763.
A not to be missed experience are the ladies selling Acaraje a local delicacy. They dress in the traditional flowing white dresses and African clothe headpieces serving this local snack with the smile and colour that they are famous for. They can be found all around Salvador with the most famous in the historical centre.
