Inhabited since 1650, Paraty has remained fundamentally unaltered since its heyday as a staging post for the eighteenth-century trade in Brazilian gold, passing from Minas Gerais to Portugal.
It is a lovely colonial town, well preserved and architecturally unique, nestled below the mountainous highlands of Rio de Janeiro state and the semi tropical Atlantic Forest. UNESCO registered Paraty is considered one of the finest examples of colonial arquitecture in Rio de Janeiro.
Paraty is a favourite with Brazilians and visitors who want not only sock up its historical past but also to laze on one of the many beaches in the area and just indulge in a restful vacation.
